High school proms may be months away, but donations are being accepted now to replenish The Prom Closet in Coon Rapids. The Prom Closet accepts donations of gently-used prom dresses, jewelry, shoes and accessories. These donations are then made available at no cost to all high school young women from the area.
Last year, a total of 62 young women, including several from Greene County, found a dress and/or accessories at The Prom Closet.
“Prom is an important memory for so many high school girls, and everyone deserves to look beautiful at their prom,” said Prom Closet coordinator Dona Tuel. “What The Prom Closet provides is an opportunity for anyone to enjoy the shopping experience without having to worry about the expense of the dress.”
The Prom Closet is housed at Ascension Lutheran Church, 406 S. Fifth St, in Coon Rapids. This is the second year it has been housed at Ascension Lutheran. It previously was located at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden.
A special drop-off day for those donating dresses and accessories was held Nov. 18. Donations may also be left during regular business hours at Iowa Savings Bank locations in Coon Rapids, Carroll and Glidden, or at Peoples Trust & Savings Bank in Guthrie Center and Jefferson. Dresses and accessories will be collected from the banks periodically, and may be donated any time up to prom season in April-May 2018.
All dresses and accessories are displayed in a special Prom Closet room at Ascension Lutheran. A separate dressing area is available.
Special shopping days for high school prom goers are scheduled on three Saturdays after the first of the year: Jan. 6, 13 and 20, from 9 am to 2 pm. Assistants will be available to help shoppers find just the right dress and accessories. There is no cost for any items at The Prom Closet, and it is open to young women from all surrounding areas.
